Convict Lake Loop
The trail is 3.25 miles total that follows the shoreline. You can hike in either direction around the lake starting next to the boat launch at the north side of the lake or at shale beach at the south side of the lake. The trail is relatively flat at an elevation of 7,850ft.
At the back of the lake there is a boardwalk that crosses the creek. In early spring, depending on snow melt, the water could be flowing too high to cross for a short period of time.

Convict Lake Overlook Trail
The 4WD trail is accessible in the summer months and is 4 miles each way. The viewpoint is situated 700 feet above the lake providing a spectacular photo opportunity. The trail head is located off of Highway 395 on Mt. Morrison Road just 2 miles south of Convict Lake Road, right before the Mt. Morrison Cemetery.
We recommend that you obtain a map and guide information before embarking on this journey. Here is a link to Trails.com for more information.
Convict Lake Backcountry
For the more adventurous and overnight backpackers, the Convict Lake Trail head is the gateway to an amazing backcountry adventure in the John Muir Wilderness. This hike is considered to be moderately difficult. The first lake, Mildred Lake, is approximately 6 miles up the trail at 9,750 feet in elevation
There are several other lakes along the trail including Lake Dorothy, Edith Lake, and Lake Genevieve all with substantial elevation gain. Brook trout are native to these lakes.
We also carry a book in our General Store called California Trails High Sierra that contains maps and directions.
A permit must be obtained from the United States Forest Service for overnight wilderness camping.
